Assessing Macular Function and Visual Field Loss
Frost & Sullivan honored AMA Optics, Inc. (Miami Beach, FL), as 2005 Ocular
Diagnostic Devices Entrepreneurial Company of the Year for developing the
Retinal Acuity Meter (RAM). Previously called the Illuminated Near Card, the RAM
obtained FDA approval in 1995 and became commercially available in the US in
July 2004. The device measures visual acuity through cataracts and is the first
instrument capable of acquiring this measurement in eyes with visual field loss
due to glaucoma as well as maculopathy.
The accuracy of the RAM depends on control of the illumination level, the
pinhole aperture, and the visual angle. The RAM Pinhole Clip enables patients to
choose the healthiest portion of their retinas when reading a vision line.
Testing with the RAM can take less than a minute and requires little training.
Additional benefits of the RAM, according to AMA Optics Director of Sales and
Marketing Thomas Minero, include its portability, its high level of patient
compliance due to its ease of use, and the prevention of surgical delays and
unexpected poor outcomes
